Microplastics (SPM) reporting obligation by May 31, 2026

By May 31, 2026, chemical companies covered by Regulation (EU) 2023/2055 are required to submit an annual report on synthetic polymer microparticles (SPM) emissions for the year 2025.

The new reporting obligations for synthetic polymer microparticles apply to a significant group of entities operating in the chemical market – in particular, producers and downstream users of industrial polymers used as feedstock in plastics manufacturing processes. According to the deadline, the report must be submitted by May 31st of each calendar year – for the previous year.

The reporting obligation applies to:

  • from 2026 – producers and downstream users of industrial synthetic polymer microparticles (including in the form of granules, powders, or flakes) used as feedstock in plastics manufacturing,
  • from 2027 – other producers, downstream users, and suppliers of specific products containing synthetic polymer microparticles.

It should be emphasized that the exemption does not exempt the user from the reporting obligation – on the contrary, it requires that the reporting obligation be properly documented in the report submitted to ECHA.Na co zwrócić szczególną uwagę?

The report on synthetic polymer microparticles is submitted annually via the IUCLID and REACH-IT systems and includes:

  • a description of the SPM uses in the given calendar year,
  • a general identification of the polymers used (for each use separately),
  • an estimated amount of microparticles released into the environment, including during transport,
  • an indication of the appropriate basis for exemption in accordance with Annex XVII to REACH.

For many chemical companies, reporting microplastics means the need to:

  • prepare data for the first time,
  • correctly estimate SPM emissions,
  • work in the IUCLID environment in accordance with ECHA requirements.
