EU Restriction Roadmap by 2030

On the 25 April 2022, the European Commission published a “Restrictions Roadmap” as part of the EU’s Chemicals Strategy. European Environmental Bureau ingles out 6 groups of chemicals to be restricted: Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and its additives PFAS (non-essential uses) Bisphenols, including BPA Flame retardants Chemicals in childcare products that cause cancer, genetic mutation or harm the reproductive system (CMRs) Toxic chemicals in single use nappies / diapers

Updated list of chemicals covered by PIC export notification + 22

Prior Informed Consent Regulation - 22 chemicals added, including 15 pesticides and 7 industrial chemicals. Exporters are now required to notify their intention to export these chemicals. In addition to export notification, most of these chemicals will also require the explicit consent of the importing country before export can take place. In addition, five chemicals previously only subject to export notification will now also require explicit consent.

Five substances added to EU REACH Authorisation List

Five substances added to REACH Authorisation List. The Authorisation List now contains 59 entries. The amendment of the Authorisation List (Annex XIV to REACH) was published on 11 April in the EU’s Official Journal. Companies that want to continue using these substances after the agreed sunset dates will need to apply for authorisation.

UPDATING REQUIREMENTS FOR CHEMICAL SUBSTANCES REGISTRATION UNDER REACH

On March 24 2022, the European Commission published amendments to Annexes VI - X of the REACH Regulation. The update of the annexes includes revised requirements for the registration of chemical substances in the European Union under REACH.

Community rolling action plan update covering the years 2022, 2023 and 2024

The Community rolling action plan (CoRAP) update for the years 2022–2024 lists 27 substances suspected of posing a risk to human health or the environment, for evaluation by 10 Member State competent authorities, under the substance evaluation process of the REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (Articles 44 to 48).

Mapping of potentially harmful chemicals on target to meet 2027 goal

The main source of information on chemicals is substance registration dossier submitted under REACH registration. ECHA has created a mapping tool for all registered substances where each substance is assigned to the appropriate category pool. ECHA's goal is to review by 2027 all registered chemicals above 1 tonne per year, assign them to the appropriate category pool and evaluate the further regulatory action of each substance (or group of substances).

3 x EU REACH Reform Web Meetings – April, May 2022

EU chemicals legislation reform 2022; EU REACH Authorisation; EU REACH Restrictions. 20th of January the European Commission launched a public consultation on the revision of the Regulation on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH). The revision will aim to align the EU chemical rules with the Commission’s ambition for safe and sustainable chemicals and a high level of protection of health and the environment, while preserving the internal market. The planned REACH revision is one of the actions announced in the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability.
