Fertilising products

What are fertilising products?

Fertilising products include a wide range of substances, mixtures, microorganisms or other materials used in agriculture to provide plants or fungi with nutrients or to improve their use. These can be mineral fertilisers, organic fertilisers, soil conditioners, biostimulants, growing media or inhibitors.

EU Regulation 2019/1009 – a new standard for fertilising products

Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 of the European Parliament and of the Council has been in force since July 2022 and establishes the rules for introducing fertilising products to the European Union market. This regulation aims to harmonise the requirements for the quality and safety of fertilising products while ensuring the protection of the environment and public health.

EU Regulation 2019/2019 introduces, among others:

  • New categories of fertilising products – these are fertilisers (including organic, organo-mineral and inorganic), liming materials, soil improvers, growing media, inhibitors, plant biostimulants, as well as fertilising product blends.
  • Detailed safety requirements, including limits on heavy metal levels.
  • Obligation to meet CE marking requirements, which confirms compliance with EU standards.
  • Requirements for declaring the composition and function of fertilisers and labelling, to ensure full transparency for users.

In parallel with the EU regulation, national regulations concerning fertilising products are still in force. Registration of products following national regulations allows for obtaining a permit to introduce a fertilising product to the market only in the territory of the country. By applying EU regulations, a fertilising product will be able to be introduced to the market throughout the European Union.
